A confrontation between members of the Mexican National Guard and a group of migrants traveling in a caravan to Mexico City took place this Thursday in the state of Chiapas. The troops apparently tried to contain the passage of the migrants when the clashes occurred.
From the National Guard they point out that its agents were supporting the activities of the National Institute of Migration (INM) when “they were attacked with stones and sticks in the Pijijiapan-Tonalá highway, by between 100 and 150 migrants.” As a consequence of the confrontation, five members of the force “were seriously injured.”
“It is important to specify that the elements of the institution at no time responded to the aggression,” the statement reads. EFE pick up that some 50 migrants threw sticks and stones at National Guard agents for about 10 minutes.
In turn, Luis Garcia, who helped organize the caravan, he claimed told Reuters that two migrants were injured in the clashes.
The migrants claimed that at least 30 people were detained during the clashes, while the official statement from the National Guard gave no information on the arrests.
Numerous videos were broadcast on social networks from the scene of the events. In some of them an unconscious guard is observed. You can see that several people kicked him, but then some individuals approached him to help him.
