Apple’s 2021 iPhones support the improved 5G standalone mode. This was announced by mobile communications experts to the dpa. According to the information, the hardware of the new iPhone 13 is already prepared for the real-time version of 5G.
However, the function still has to be activated by a software update. It is still unclear when that will happen. However, the experts expect that the iPhone manufacturer will publish this before the presentation of its next smartphone model series – the iPhone 14 will come as usual in autumn 2022.
Vodafone could be first
5G standalone offers some innovations. The technology is currently being set up by Vodafone, among others. There the technology is considered to be the next stage of development, because it works without the previous LTE radio method. Devices are therefore constantly logged into the 5G network and do not have to switch back.
At Vodafone, all 5G antennas and the core network are to be migrated to 5G standalone. The new technology will noticeably reduce latencies and should, for example, allow machines to be controlled in real time. Hannes Ametsreiter.
Also test Telekom and O2
The technology is also being tested by other mobile operators such as Telekom and O2. At O2, virtual reality gaming applications are being experimented with in a test network with 5G standalone. Deutsche Telekom has been testing 5G standalone in Garching near Munich since February, but has not yet announced any major live operation in the area.
Apple’s activation of the technology should give it a real boost. Currently only a few devices from Samsung or Oppo offer 5G standalone, the iPhone could open up the mass market. In theory, this could increase the range of the new standard from the current 10 million people to 60 million by the end of 2022. In practice, however, the number of users will be much lower.
