“Perfectly balanced water enjoyment at the push of a button. Inspired by the natural water cycle, in which rainwater is cleaned and enriched with minerals on its way through the rock layers” – this is how the manufacturer “Mitte” celebrated its “smart premium water purifier” at the market launch today.
The goal is to be achieved with a “mineral cartridge” that filters the water with activated carbon, lowers its pH value and enriches it with minerals – according to the company, an in-house development. An additional CO₂ cylinder enables the 860 ml PET bottle to be filled not only with still water, but also with slightly or more strongly sparkling water.
In the future there will also be other cartridges for other types of water in addition to the current “Balance” flavor. To date, Mitte does not offer syrups that can be used to give the water a different taste. When asked, Moritz Waldstein explained that one could imagine developing suitable additives for athletes, for example. Other additives are also planned, but these should be natural and as sugar-free as possible. The typical lemonade syrups are therefore not to be expected from Mitte.
Not without my app
(Photo: You can use the Mitte app to check how long the cartridge will last – and of course to reorder a replacement.)
In addition, Home is “smart”, which in this case means that the device can communicate via WLAN with an associated app on the Android or iOS app. This means that users can check the fill level of the mineral cartridge equipped with an NFC tag (sufficient for around 250 liters of water according to the manufacturer) and the CO₂ cylinder (425g CO₂) – and order a replacement from the in-house online shop if necessary . With a “Smart Refill” function, the refill packs can also be ordered automatically on request. A single cartridge costs just under 45 euros, the four-pack CO₂ cylinder around 88 euros. CO₂ cylinders from other manufacturers are generally compatible, but according to Mitte you may not have the optimal user experience.
Networking is completely optional, Mitte Home can also be used offline. According to the manufacturer, sensitive user data is not evaluated, the system should be fully GDPR-compliant. As expected, the manufacturer does not recommend offline use, as networking is a “great asset”.
price
The device, which weighs around 5.5 kg, costs around 350 euros in the starter kit in the manufacturer’s web shop with a mineral cartridge, a CO₂ cylinder and a PET bottle – and is priced well above the sets from the market leader Sodastream, for 74 to 131 Euros are available. However, there the water is only bubbled up and not mineralized. And there is also no smartphone connection.
The empty Mitte Home Cartridges will be returned to Mitte with a free return label. The company takes care of the recycling. According to the manufacturer, all emissions generated during production are offset 100 percent. Furthermore, Mitte says it supports the organization Water.org in providing small loans for clean water in the poorest regions of the world. For every middle cartridge you use, the company will donate a counter-amount to give someone affected by drinking water pollution access to clean water for at least two years.
