The Gesellschaft für Informatik – GI for short – has started the 17th edition of its informatCup student competition. This time the students should create a timetable for a rail network. The aim of the “Departure!” Task is software for calculating optimal timetables, which minimizes the overall delay of all passengers.
Sounds easy, it isn’t
This task may sound profane at first. According to the speaker of the informatiCup jury Prof. Dr. Alexander Paar, however, presents a number of challenges that must first be carefully analyzed in order to optimize the use of resources. Above all, however, the algorithmic core of this year’s informatiCup task addresses a tangible practical problem that ultimately faces every logistics company that transports people or goods.
The GI competition, which has been held annually since 2006, is aimed at enrolled students of all semesters and all subject areas at universities and technical colleges in Germany, Austria and Switzerland. The aim is for the participants to familiarize themselves with new technologies independently and to develop problem solutions in teamwork from the knowledge they have acquired. The task typically requires theoretical knowledge, the ability to solve scientific problems and modern presentation techniques.
Register for a team
If you are interested, you can find out about the new online portal teammates Register as a participant and invite others to join a team. This team must then be registered for the competition by November 30th. In that too new informatiCup CI system (ICUPCI) a Git repository will then be set up for each team so that functional tests can be carried out during the ongoing competition if necessary. The complete solution must also be available in the repository by January 16, 2022 at the latest. The final presentation should then take place in March.
As usual, the three best solutions will be rewarded with prize money totaling 7,000 euros. Amazon, PPI AG, Netlight Consulting GmbH and genua GmbH support the competition as sponsors. GitHub provides technical support. This is a media partner iX Magazin.
