The new coronavirus pandemic has caused at least 4,793,613 deaths in the world since the WHO office in China reported the appearance of the disease in December 2019, according to a balance established by AFP this Sunday at 10:00 GMT from official sources.
Since the beginning of the epidemic, more than 234,542,240 people have contracted the disease. The vast majority of patients recover, but a still poorly evaluated part maintains symptoms for weeks or even months.
The figures are based on the reports communicated daily by the health authorities of each country and exclude the corrections made a posteriori by the different statistical agencies that conclude that the number of deaths is much more important.
The WHO even estimates that if the overmortality linked to covid-19 is taken into account, directly and indirectly, the balance of the pandemic could be two to three times higher than that officially registered.
A significant part of less severe or asymptomatic cases remains undetected despite the intensification of testing in many countries.
On Saturday, 6,364 new deaths and 396,062 infections were registered in the world. The countries that registered the most deaths, according to the latest official balances, are the United States, with 983; Russia (890) and Mexico (614).
The number of deaths in the United States amounts to 700,935, with 43,658,032 infections. After the United States, the countries with the most fatalities are Brazil, with 597,723 deaths and 21,459,117 cases; India, with 448,817 deaths (33,813,903 cases); Mexico, with 278,592 deaths (3,678,980 cases); and Russia, with 209,918 deaths (7,586,536 cases).
Among the hardest hit countries, Peru has the highest mortality rate, with 605 deaths per 100,000 inhabitants, followed by Bosnia (324), North Macedonia (321), Hungary (313), Montenegro (308), and Bulgaria (302 ).
On Sunday at 10:00 GMT and since the beginning of the epidemic, Latin America and the Caribbean added 1,492,645 deaths (45,037,562 infections), Europe, 1,316,322 (68,169,439); Asia, 842,664 (54,127,309); United States and Canada, 728,880 (45,289,238); Africa, 211,136 (8,313,436); Middle East, 199,752 (13,420,110); and Oceania, 2,214 (185,154).
