Bare Bones Software has revised the BBEdit editor, which is well-known in the macOS world, and has given it a note function in addition to smaller features. It helps developers to store notes and code snippets on a project-specific or cross-project basis, which is useful when working with many parallel projects.
The content should be structured, easy to find and easy to change. A commitment to a project does not go far enough here. This is the direction in which the Notes aim. They can be structured in folders and retain their assigned file type, even without a special extension. Accordingly, you can navigate in the notes and also set flags. Notes are written using the menu or in the Notes window. When searching over several files, the Notes can be specified as sources. The notes are named automatically.
Another feature is the integration of the Language Server Protocol (LSP). This protocol, based on external servers for individual languages, was developed by Microsoft. With LSP, BBEdit extends the functions for editing source code. The protocol now completes code much better than the previously supported Ctags tool. Navigation to definition and references in the source code is now faster. Error messages, warnings and information are displayed directly in the editor by the integrated linter and the source text can be reformatted when supported by the language server.
