Toronto (Canada), Sep 27 (EFE) .- Emergency teams have been working since Sunday to rescue 39 people who were trapped in a mine in the town of Sudbury, about 400 kilometers north of Toronto, as reported on Monday by the Vale company and union sources.
Brazilian miner Vale said in a statement that personnel have been trapped in the Totten mine since Sunday afternoon after the shovel of an excavator that was being transported into the mine detached, blocking the shaft.
“For this reason, the means of transportation for the employees is not available,” the company said, adding that its 39 employees are “safe” and ready to leave the mine.
The company also reported that, when the incident occurred, employees sought protection in the mine shelters and that it has been in “frequent communication” with those trapped. None of the miners were injured.
“Rescue teams have reached out to the miners and it is beginning to remove it using a secondary exit system,” the company concluded.
The Totten mine, which produces nickel, copper and other metals, started operations in 2014 and employs about 200 people. Totten’s main well is 1,258 meters deep.
