A leather bag from the 14th-16th centuries was found during excavations carried out about 200 meters from the citadel of Pskov, a historic city in northwestern Russia. The local Archaeological Center public recording the find on his Instagram page.
Despite its age, the object has not decomposed and has even preserved its structure. Inside the bag, the scientists found a candle and fragments of tissue. The finding is currently awaiting study by a tissue specialist.
The high conservation of organic material in Pskov is explained by the predominance of humid soils in the area, in which water prevents air access and prevents the spread of microbes. As a result, this city, whose origins date back to the beginning of the 10th century, constitutes an important archaeological site. In 2019, it was included in the list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites.
